Welcome to Giving Groves, a hunger relief ministry sponsored by
St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
"I can't take my girls shopping because they grab for things I can't
afford, like fruits and vegetables." Sophena Murphy, mother of 3 girls.
Can you imagine? Not being able to feed your family basic nutritional items
like fruits and vegetables? It happens all the time in San Diego, where tens
of thousands of people live in hunger. But there is a wonderful way for your
group to make a big difference in just ONE DAY! by volunteering to be part
of the Giving Groves Project.
Our mission is to feed the hungry all year long by saving fresh produce that
would otherwise go to waste and giving it to those in need. We do this through
private citrus groves around the county. Many of these groves have citrus
trees that are not commercially viable to pick (either because there isn't
enough fruit to justify the labor cost to pick it or the private owner has generously
donated the fruit to us.) That's where your group comes in! You go out into
the grove and pick these fruits; from there, they are donated to the San
Diego Food Bank for distribution throughout San Diego County.
This is a fun activity where the whole family can participate!
